Should the death penalty be introduced in the UK?
Some people are of the opinion that the UK legal system is leniant in some cases, which allows for people to do crimes knowing they would get a lighter sentence. With this in mind some people think the Death Penalty should be introduced.

I FIRMLY believe that NO MAN or WOMAN has the right to take another human being's life ( tempting as it might be) - i think there are other ways in which to punish harshly woithout resorting to murder!!
ReplyDeleteI firmly believe we should'nt let murderers, rapists, molesters take up our money/time in prison, we should definately introduce the death penalt.y
ReplyDeletewell i feel that a life for a life as if someone purposely kills someone they should not be allowed to live as most murderers will do it more than once, but if murder was in self defence and this is proven beyond reasonable doubt then the death penalty should not apply!!
ReplyDeleteThe law exists to promote justice. Omitting for a moment the idea of revenge; and Ghandi's "an eye for an eye makes the world blind"; or the idea that an unremorseful murderer is going to live out his life being fed and watered; the English Judiciary system and the Democratic system have evolved through the centuries to become a model system for the rest of the world. We do not have a U.S. system of trying to balance State autonomy, our system is centralized. We do not have political prisoners, and we have a very thoroughly thought through and balanced approach to law. Although there are still problems within the sytem: I believe for Britain to maintain its stance as a model democratic society in Europe and the rest of the world, it would be a step backwards for the law in this country to regress to the feudal idea that murder at the hands of the state is acceptable. Whatever the circumstances, whatever your political or religious leanings, to kill is fundamentally wrong and that knowledge exists in everyone. And the law in this country has evolved to represent that 'soul' fact. It should not be changed.

ReplyDeleteI agree with Tom (not on the DEMOCRACY statement) - those that say an eye for an eye - where do you leave room for error? For instance - the case of 3 welsh men wrongfully accused of murder, who later got compensation after spending 11 years in jail - do you tell their families 'oops-our bad!!!' when you have now killed them for something they didn't do?
ReplyDeleteTotally agree Yvonne. And my apologies I should have presented a more objective view point, I was attempting to say it from Britain's perspective as a model democratic society. As a History student I should say 'they' and 'them' not 'we' because that implies my commentary is swayed by a patronage to my country. When its not: my comments are just plain fact :p
ReplyDeleteI agree no man/woman should have the right to take anyone else's life. But quite frankly what gives murders, paedophiles, rapists the right to harm others!
ReplyDeleteYes the law is to promote justice but is it working?
As for being proven innocent after so many years of imprisonment, they have just said sorry our bad and expect them to integrate back in to society as if nothing had happened. Anyone with half a brain cell knows it doesn't work that way, these people still have to live with what happened. Would it be easier if they were just dead with their name cleared, at least their family and friends would feel a sense of closure.
Although I would like to see the death penalty in action again, would it make criminals stop and think again? I do think they're a waste of space, money, oxygen.
I think that there shouldnt be a death penalty because of reasons people have put down but I also think that when they give someone a life sentence, it should be for life and not let them out 20 years later.
ReplyDeleteI believe that without the death sentence or life imprisonment meaning 'life' there is no sentence that strikes fear into a criminals mind. With the maximum punishment available to a murder being 25years I certainly believe that justice is not served! Although bringing back capital punishment may seem a bit extreme the thought of losing your life over a crime such as murder would certainly reduce the amount that occur everyday. Certain defences should still clear you of the death sentence (if it were brought back) such as insanity and automatism etc. Therefore i think that the death penalty coming back would be a good thing for the country as it would scare people away from commiting big crimes and would make where we live a safer palce. The law in this country is way too leniant hence why crimes are rising quickly, murderers really are not scared of 25years maximum in prison but probably out in 18years. We need to do something drastic so why not the death penalty?
ReplyDeleteIn relation to my previous post other defences to be taken into consideration when deciding the sentence should be provocation and diminished responsibility as well as insanity and automatism.
ReplyDeleteToo say that people who are wrongfully imprisoned might as well have been killed as it would be easier for them is ludacris. (cant even dignify that with a proper response) I will say however, that i am sure i would rather have my loved one alive than killed by the system for something he didn't do - as for the death penalty - for the countries that have this system like 'anonymous' said it hasn't stopped people from getting murdered, raped etc...... so why adopt this method of punishment if it aint working..
ReplyDeleteI think that people should pay for their crimes. prison should be a punishment and not free accommodation as it is here. they should be sentenced to hard labour (at least get them to work hard for their 'keep') and life sentences without the option for parole and not be rewarded with cells that have tv's etc.
Obviously imprisonment and death doesn't deter criminals how about torture? What's worse the fact that you kill them by so called humane means or torture them in such a way they want death.
ReplyDeleteMaybe we should make good of them and harvest their organs!
I defently agree with yvonne with the fact that prison shouldnt be free accommodation but they should be doing labour, like cleaning the streets and so on...it could be one of the reasons why they keep going back to prison because it isnt harsh enough. if that makes any sense??
ReplyDeleteLynn.. child sex offenders, premeditated murder and proven or addmited to =the death penalty
ReplyDeleteHow can the British legal system be fair when there are SO MANY murderers, multiple rapist and kiddy fiddlers swaning about the country as free as you like!!!! yet people shoplifting or drinking in public get locked up for months at a time.
ReplyDeleteHow about a trial period of lethal injections for PROVEN rapists and child sex offenders, this would not only get rid of a few ACTUALLY FOUND GUILTY but would leave plenty of spaces in seaside bail hostels.
I dont believe in the death penalty. However I firmly believe that there should be longer sentences for violent crime.
ReplyDeleteIn the UK when a murderer is given a life sentence they are released after about 9 to 10 years. How ridiculous!!!..what about the person who's been killed he's never going to get another chance at life. Yet killers are let out of jail early. THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE.
And when they are in jail these criminals live in relative comfort. They've got play station,Wii,free gym, computers ..How annoying is that! No wonder they keep committing crime.
Prisons and jail should be punitive not cushy.
Prisons are said to be overcrowded. BUILD MORE PRISONS THEN. Let the criminals provide the cheap labour to build these jails.
NUFF SAID!!!
